THOUGHT OF THE MOMENT:

Freedom,  Prosperity and Peace...

FOREVER.

6/20/06

This is a "Letter to the Editor" that appeared in the print edition of the Henry Herald out of Georgia:

Over the past few days my mailbox has been inundated with pamphlets about all of the candidates running in the Georgia primary elections. As in the past, I have carefully read the material presented to me in an effort to determine in which primary I'll be participating. Normally, either the Republicans or the Democrats provide a slate of candidates who appear to be carbon copies of one another. This makes my decision easy. I just vote in the primary that contains a candidate that I disagree with the most, allowing me to voice my displeasure at said entrant. This year I am befuddled.

The Democrats have offered me no choice for governor or lieutenant governor. All of their candidates appear to have the same agenda (to dix the state by taking more of my money). No matter what the issue, be it healthcare, immigration, or education, the platforms were almost exactly the same. It's almost as if they share the same press secretary. Aha, I though, I'll just vote in the Republican primary!

The Republicans give me a choice between an average current governor or Ray McBerry, a man who doesn't seem to comprehend the First Amendment. For lieutenant governor, the offer up Casey Cagle, who puts the "fun" in fundamental, or Ralph Reed, a man who seemingly is working on holding the Guinness Book record for most scandals in a lifetime.

As I stated before, I'm bewildered. The Democrats are offering me a chance to roll the die and pick the same "give me more of your money" candidate no matter which box I click and the Republicans are offering me a chance to have my life run by the "thought police." This is the best that the two major parties have to offer? For the first time in my 20-plus years of voting, I am not looking forward to the primary elections. I guess I'll flip a coin before picking in which primary to vote.

Thankfully, I live in a country ripe with third party candidates. Come November, I'll have the opportunity to let the Democrats and Republicans know what I think of their candidates. After reading the web sites for the "other" party candidates, I think the Libertarians are offering a slate of candidates who seem to understand the United STATES Constitution, don't feel the need to pick my pocket (Democrats, keep your hands to yourself), and appear to appreciate the plurality of America (seriously, Republicans, it's OK that we think and believe differently). We have alternatives to the two major parties. I chose the Libertarian Party, but maybe you'll find that you like the Green Party, the Constitution Party, or an Independent candidate.

I encourage everyone to go to the Web site of all the candidates and make wise choices. I am not a member of any political party; I vote for individuals, not national agendas. Vote your conscience, not your favorite color, be it blue or red.
