BECAUSE IT FEELS GOOD
By Mark Augustyn - 10/21/06
Amanda Millay, the engine behind The Georgia Libertarian newspaper, requested from me many months ago, an article to include in a future issue of this publication about my Libertarian activism. Let me start by saying that I am flattered to have been asked. Thanks Amanda. Having procrastinated long enough, I thought the recent success of the Georgia Libertarian Benefit Concert was as good of a reason as any, to take a moment here at the laptop and reflect a little about what it means to me to be an active Libertarian.
Simply and to the point, I do what I do for the Libertarian cause here in Georgia because it feels good to me. That is it; no more and no less. For myself, helping the cause of the Libertarian movement feels intuitive and natural, just like any of the other interests that share time in my life. ‘Live and let live’; what great message and ideal to be actively involved in sharing and spreading here in Georgia!
As an active Libertarian, it feels good to know that I am part of a process of informing, educating, and sharing the wisdom of the Libertarian perspective to others in and around where I live, by trying and doing things to broadcast that message as far and wide as possible. The recent joy that was the thinkLIBERTARIAN.com sponsored Georgia Libertarian Benefit Concert falls into this category.
Over $1,000 was raised for the Georgia Libertarian Party. Over 100 people attended to hear five bands perform, many of these people new to the Georgia Libertarian Party. The ad in the Creative Loafing looked great. And all of this was the result of a simple idea that arose from a simple conversation between two people who support the Libertarian cause. That’s it. That is all it took, an idea. With the idea came thought, which then eventually lead to words. With enough words, repeated often enough, only one outcome was possible, action. And only action can bring about that which is desired and ultimately good: results. Thanks to many of you reading this, for that is what we all got as Georgia Libertarians that night and it sure felt good.
Being an active Georgia Libertarian makes me feel good in other ways too. Last night, it meant some pizza with my friend Dave Flanagan, former Libertarian candidate for Georgia House, District 83. After the pizza, it was off to find some local neighborhoods as we both had some extra Libertarian literature sitting around our houses. We spoke recently and decided we should go out before the election and get this literature distributed. Last night we did just that. We walked some local neighborhoods for about 3 hours. We got out a sizable stack of cool Libertarian outreach newspapers, followed by flyers for the Cherry and Chastain campaigns. We have more literature left so there will be a few more nights of Libertarian literature distribution before the election. I love it.
Tomorrow morning, being an active Libertarian will mean feeling good about going out with the Hayes for Governor campaign to the Atlanta Falcons tailgate festivities at the Georgia Dome. A few Mondays ago, being an active Libertarian meant helping out with an outreach at Georgia State University in downtown Atlanta. Next week, Libertarian activism will be helping out some candidates at a Georgia Tech football game here in town. Monday Libertarian activism will be making a pit stop at North Georgia College in Dahlonega. And sometimes being an active Libertarian means stuffing envelopes at the office over on Peachtree. Yes, even stuffing envelopes makes me feel good.
Being a Libertarian activist simply requires that you be active. Somehow, someway, in whatever fashion you deem most comfortable, that is what the Libertarian Party, and the movement as a whole need more and more of, active people. Individuals who are passionate enough to give whatever time they can, as Libertarian activism knows now minimum or maximum amount of time required. And for whatever time you can give, know for sure that it will feel good.
By the time anyone reads this, the November 7th elections will already have come and gone. I hope that based on the absolutely stellar poll results we are seeing currently (i.e. Hayes at 9%!), that these words will be read at a time when the Georgia Libertarian Party is celebrating a new found respect and presence here in Georgia politics. And if the results should not be as good as we might have expected, then I shall still be here, pushing, marketing, and promoting the freedom and liberty only us Libertarians at the moment seem to value. I will continue to do this because it feels good to be an active Libertarian.
